For some obvious reasons, the true place of African civilisation has been pushed to the background of world focus, while projecting that of the West as the original and the best. Herbal Medicine and the Revival of African Civilization by Anselm Adodo, author, reverend father, and apostle of the efficacy of herbal healing, provides answers to this, and why Africa and Africans should be proud of their history, heritage, tradition, culture, civilisation and inventions. All of these were exported, or better still stolen, by the West to better their own economies and societies to the detriment of the original inventors Africans.

Readers will find the book extremely informative, inspiring, challenging and thought-provoking. Though a non-fiction, specialized book, the author, whether deliberately or not, decides to the leave the subject matter of the title to the end, thus putting the reader in a lot of suspense, yet feeding him with a lot of background knowledge of Africa's proud heritage. He takes a look at the past; concerning especially the myth that Africa has no history and debunks such with facts from African civilisation before

The human body is so constituted that there must be a balance between the contraction of the left ventricle of the heart and the amount of blood pumped out into the aorta. When the pressure that the blood exerts on the blood vessels is consistently and abnormally high, it is called hypertension, when it is consistently and abnormally low, it is called hypotension.

The human blood pressure varies during the course of the day. The blood pressure goes up during physical exercise, or while doing serious brainwork or if one is excessively worried. The blood pressure is at its lowest during sleep. The only reliable way to measure the blood pressure is by using the sphygmomanometer. The best time to measure the blood pressure is in the morning, shortly after rising. A blood pressure of 135/70mmHg or 140/70mmHg is considered normal. A blood pressure of 140/90 is considered slightly high. A blood pressure of 150/90 or 150/100 is considered severe.

In his welcome address, the director of PAX Herbal Clinic and Research Laboratories, Rev. Fr. Anselm Adodo, OSB, stated that the aim of the workshop was to bring policy makers, government agencies and the private enterprises together to discuss the potentials of herbal medicine in primary healthcare, disease prevention and wealth creation.

He listed the objective of the workshop as follows:

Improved healthcare delivery from the development of Traditional Medicine Knowledge and Practice, (TMKP), in view of the vast number of Nigerians that depend on it for healthcare maintenance.

Reducing drastically the level of secrecy of TMKP among Traditional Medicine Practitioners, 9TMP's).

As a major participant in this workshop, what would you say are the major goals and objectives of this programme?
This is the 2nd edition. First, it is to concretise the achievements of the first one. Second, we want a situation where the orthodox medical practitioners are in a situation to prescribe alongside orthodox drugs, Pax Herbal products that have been approved by NAFDAC.

We want to propagate that which God has given to us to sustain us in the environment He has chosen to place us. Our ability to tap what is around us is also very important. The orthodox medical practitioners who have participated in this programme are very enthusiastic to know about herbal medicine, especially in a situation where they are prepared very close to scientific methods.

The idea is for them to go back to their respective clinics and be well disposed to recommend or use these herbal medicines in a situation where they believe and are convinced that they will also assist the patient.

However, herbal products are very cheap to produce and are readily available. The main objective is to bring health nearer to the people on a more massive scale.

Rev. Fr. Anslem Adodo, OSB, in his welcome address explained that Pax Herbal is irrevocably committed to the transformation of the herbal medicine sector because over 70 per cent of Africans depend on herbal medicine when they fall ill. He added that most families in Nigeria are resorting to herbal medicine in the treatment of malaria due to widespread resistance of the illness to orthodox drugs and the rampant seizure of fake malaria drugs by regulatory agencies.

Adodo reasoned that having received visitors from the World Health Organisation, (WHO); the United Nations; the United States; Europe; Zimbabwe; Abuja and other capital cities in Nigeria, it became imperative to approach the management of Irrua Specialist Hospital, in whose locality Paxherbals operate, for a formal visit.
He disclosed that a corroborative programme in which the Sickle Cell Centre, in Benin, uses Pax Herbal products for its patients is already in progress. The Sickle Cell Centre is expected to intimate

Helena says the American Government is interested in serious-minded and credible Nigerian institutions like PAXHERBALS, as they are seen as partners in growth and development.

After a detailed tour of the facilities at PAXHERBALS, she has this to say: ‘I have been in Nigeria just a little more than a year. Perhaps I have not travelled round the country enough. However, I want to say that this is one of the most impressive institutions I have seen in Nigeria. I am have impressive by the beautiful architecture and well –lay out plans of the various departments. There is evidence of efficiency and seriousness everywhere. The environment is so neat and clean. I have visited the Niger Delta many times and it has always been bad news.

<img src="http://www.paxherbals.net//images/stories/contents/2009/ginger.jpg" alt="Ginger" class="content" Zingiber officinale is one of about 1400 species in the Zingiberaceae family of herbs. Native of Asia, ginger grows well in the tropical countries of the world. Ginger is widely cultivated in West Africa, especially in Nigeria and Sierra Leone. Of the over 1400 species of aromatic herbs in the Zingiberaceae family, ginger is the most powerful and the most well-known. The perennial tuberous rhizome is mistakenly referred to as root. Just as one does not call yam tuber root, so also one should not call the ginger rhizome 'root'. The rhizome is ginger. Because of differing climatic conditions, each variety of Zingiber has its own unique aroma and flavour. Ginger grown in China is often mild in flavour while ginger in Africa is hot and peppery. Jamaican ginger often has very strong aroma.

The botanical name for ginger was given by a Swedish botanist named Linnaeus. It comes from the Sankrist word 'singabera', which means 'shaped like a horn'. The term officinale simply means that it is commonly available. Indeed, ginger is a common feature in the cooking pots of cooks as well as the concoction jars of herbalists.

In China it is called sheng jian,

Female productive organs are guided by a set of hormones called sex hormones. These hormonesare produced in a set of almond shaped organs known as the ovaries. They are situated within the pelvis, one on each side of the uterus or womb.

There are five reproductive hormones in women:
ESTROGEN: This hormone gives the woman strength and stamina, and is largely responsible for the peculiarly feminine shape and beauty. The ovaries attar produces large quantities of estrogen, the dominant female hormone when a girl reaches about twelve years of age. This enables her to grow rapidly and develop into a normal young woman. The commencement of menstruation at this time arouse the productive phase of her life when she can have children. This phase may last for 35 years. This hormone is also responsible for menstrual flow. When estrogen production is cut off, menstruation ceases.

FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE (FSH): This hormone is responsible for the production of egg follicle which leads to ovulation. When FSH is not produced the woman cannot ovulate and in such circumstance the woman becomes infertile.

LEUTINISING HORMONE: This hormone helps the release of egg follicle for fertilization.
PROGESTROL HORMONE: this is the hormone that
